About SOL Freedom Fund

Our Story

SOL Freedom Fund emerged from a simple but urgent question:

What would it look like if families had both the freedom and the financial support to choose learning environments where their children can thrive?

Through the work of SOL Learning Center, we have seen what becomes possible when education is personalized, relational, project-based, and rooted in community. Families often find in alternative learning environments what they have long been seeking — belonging, flexibility, challenge, joy, and support.

Yet for many families, access to these opportunities is limited by cost.

SOL Freedom Fund was created to help change that.

We are building pathways so that educational freedom is not reserved for a few, but accessible to many.

Building Pathways to Educational Freedom

SOL Freedom Fund is a public initiative of Support, Opportunity, and Love Foundation, Inc., created to expand access to family-directed learning through scholarships, partnerships, and community-rooted opportunity.

We believe families deserve meaningful choices in how children learn — and the resources to pursue them.

Our Mission

The mission of Support, Opportunity, and Love Foundation is to enrich the lives of children and adults by expanding access to alternative learning models and community-rooted opportunities.

Through SOL Freedom Fund, we advance that mission by:

Providing scholarships and microgrants to families

Strengthening unconventional learning models through partnerships

Building the funding infrastructure needed to support educational freedom in Maryland

Why Maryland Needs This

Families are increasingly choosing homeschooling, microschools, tutoring collectives, and co-learning communities.

Yet unlike states with Education Savings Accounts and scholarship programs, Maryland offers no direct funding support for families pursuing these pathways.

This creates a gap between educational choice and educational access.

We believe Maryland families deserve more.

SOL Freedom Fund exists to help build the support system that has been missing.

Rooted in What We’ve Already Seen

SOL Freedom Fund is informed by lessons from SOL Learning Center, a community-based co-learning model grounded in Support, Opportunity, and Love.

That work has shown us:

  • Children thrive in personalized environments

  • Families value flexible, relationship-centered learning

  • Community-led models can expand what education looks like

SOL Learning Center serves as a proof-of-concept for what is possible.

SOL Freedom Fund seeks to help more families and learning communities access those possibilities.

Support

Every child and family deserves a learning community where they are seen and supported.

Opportunity

Education should expand possibilities, not limit them.

Love

Learning flourishes in environments grounded in care, belonging, and human dignity.

Our Values

We envision a future where:

  • Family-directed learning is accessible

  • Community-rooted education can thrive

  • Financial barriers do not determine educational opportunity

  • Maryland becomes a place where educational freedom is supported and sustainable

We are helping build that future.
